The Shadow of the Bear is a naturally occurring phenomenon in Cashiers, North Carolina- about 40 miles from Cherokee. The Bear is visible for only 30 minutes a day from mid-October through early November. During that time, the shadow comes out of hibernation as the sun sets behind Whiteside Mountain. Whiteside has an elevation of 4,390 feet with sheer rock cliffs that are among the highest in the eastern United States.
